Receiving a Salary for the Work of the Lord
This is an important question, and the Bible does address the principle of financial support for those who dedicate themselves fully to the work of the Lord, such as pastors, elders, ministers, and missionaries. Let’s look at what Scripture teaches:
Jesus’ Teaching
Jesus Himself affirmed that those who serve in ministry have a right to material support:
“…the worker deserves his wages.”— (Luke 10:7).
Here, Jesus sent out His disciples and instructed them to accept hospitality and provision from those they ministered to, because their work for the Lord was worthy of support.
Paul’s Teaching
The Apostle Paul, in his letters, makes this principle even clearer:
“Don’t you know that those who serve in the temple get their food from the temple, and that those who serve at the altar share in what is offered on the altar? In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel.” — (1 Corinthians 9:13–14).
Paul uses the example of Old Testament priests, who were supported by the offerings of the people, and applies it to Christian ministers. He explicitly says that the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from it.
Support for Elders
Paul also instructs Timothy regarding the support of church leaders:
“The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. For Scripture says, ‘Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,’ and ‘The worker deserves his wages.” — (1 Timothy 5:17–18).
Here, “double honor” refers not only to respect but also to financial support, especially for those who labor in preaching and teaching.
In Summary
Jesus affirms that workers for the Lord deserve their wages (Luke 10:7).
Paul teaches that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from it (1 Corinthians 9:13–14).
Elders, especially those who preach and teach, are worthy of financial support (1 Timothy 5:17–18).
The Bible is clear that it is both right and biblical for those who fully dedicate themselves to the work of the Lord to receive material support from the church, which is the body of Christ. This allows them to focus on ministry without being burdened by financial concerns.
