Can I Change Myself?

That’s a powerful and honest question—can I change myself? The short answer is: yes, change is possible, but lasting and meaningful change comes not from our own strength alone, but through the transforming power of God.

We All Need Change

Every human being struggles with brokenness in some form—whether it’s fear, addiction, pride, insecurity, or something else. The Bible tells us that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). That means we all need transformation, not just behavior modification, but a deep change of heart.

Real Change Comes from God

You can try to change yourself through willpower, and sometimes that works for a while. But lasting change—especially in our character, our identity, and our deepest struggles—comes from God working in us. (Philippians 2:13) says:

“For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” (Philippians 2:13).

This means that God doesn’t just give us commands—He gives us the power to obey them. He works in our hearts to change our desires and actions.

Transformation Through a Relationship with Jesus

When we surrender our lives to Jesus Christ, we begin a journey of transformation. The Bible describes this process beautifully:

“And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” (2 Corinthians 3:18).

This transformation is not instant, but progressive. As we walk with Christ, read His Word, and allow the Holy Spirit to work in us, we become more like Him.

You Are Not Alone

If you’re struggling with something like an eating disorder, addiction, or deep emotional pain, know that you are not alone. Many people feel trapped in cycles they can’t break. But healing begins when we stop trying to fix ourselves by ourselves.

“I have failed miserably to change because I have forgotten that it is you who will do the changing in me. No mere striving on my part will ever bring about a lasting change in my character.”

A New Identity in Christ

When you come to Christ, you are given a new identity. You are no longer defined by your past, your failures, or even your struggles. (2 Corinthians 5:17) says:

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

This doesn’t mean you’ll never struggle again, but it means your life is now rooted in something far greater than your own strength—God’s grace.

So, Can You Change Yourself?

Yes—but not by your own power alone. Real, lasting change happens when you invite Jesus into your life and allow Him to transform you from the inside out. He doesn’t just want to improve your behavior; He wants to give you a new heart, a new mind, and a new purpose.

If you’re ready for that kind of change, it begins with surrender—acknowledging your need for God and trusting Him to do what you cannot do on your own.

Would you like to explore what that surrender looks like?

We Must Surrender to God

Surrendering to God is not about giving up in defeat—it’s about giving over your life to the One who made you, loves you, and can truly transform you. Let’s walk through what that surrender looks like, step by step.

Recognize Your Need for God

The first step is acknowledging that you can’t fix yourself on your own. The Bible says:

“There is no one righteous, not even one… all have turned away… there is no one who does good, not even one.” (Romans 3:10-12).

This doesn’t mean you’re worthless—it means you’re human. We all fall short of God’s perfect standard. But God doesn’t leave us there.

Believe in What Jesus Did for You

God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to rescue us from sin and death. Jesus lived a sinless life, died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins, and rose again to give us new life.

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8).

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23).

Believing in Jesus means trusting that His death and resurrection are enough to forgive your sins and give you a new life.

Turn Away from Sin (Repentance)

Surrender means turning away from the things that separate you from God—your sin—and turning toward Him. This doesn’t mean you’ll be perfect, but it means you no longer want to live for yourself.

“Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.” (Acts 3:19).

Receive Jesus as Lord and Savior

This is the moment of surrender—when you say, “Jesus, I want You to lead my life.” You’re not just asking Him to fix your problems; you’re giving Him your whole heart.

“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9).

Begin a New Life with God

When you surrender to Christ, you are made new. The Holy Spirit comes to live in you, guiding you, comforting you, and helping you grow.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
(2 Corinthians 5:17).

What Now?

If you’re ready to surrender your life to Jesus, you can do that right now by simply speaking to Him from your heart. You don’t need fancy words—just honesty and faith.

After that, it’s important to:

Read the Bible regularly to grow in your understanding (start with the Gospel of John).

Find a Bible-believing church where you can be encouraged and discipled.

Be baptized, as a public declaration of your faith.

Surround yourself with believers who will walk with you in this journey.

What it Means to Follow Jesus Day by Day?

Following Jesus day by day means living in a personal, growing relationship with Him—trusting Him, obeying His Word, and allowing Him to shape your life. It’s not just a one-time decision; it’s a daily journey of walking with the One who gave His life for you.

Jesus Himself said:

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”
(Luke 9:23).

Let’s look at what that means in practical terms:

Deny Yourself

This means putting Jesus first in every area of your life—your time, relationships, desires, and decisions. It’s not about losing your identity, but about surrendering your will to God’s will.

“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20).

Take Up Your Cross Daily

Taking up your cross means being willing to endure hardship, sacrifice, or even rejection for the sake of following Jesus. It’s a call to live with courage and faith, even when it’s hard.

“If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” (Mark 8:34).
(Quoted in “Following Jesus” – All About God Ministries)

This doesn’t mean every day will be filled with suffering, but it does mean that following Jesus may cost you comfort, popularity, or personal ambition. And yet, it leads to true life.

Abide in Christ

To follow Jesus daily, you must stay connected to Him—like a branch connected to a vine. Jesus said:

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).

Abiding in Christ means spending time with Him through:

Reading the Bible – to hear His voice and know His truth.

Prayer – to speak with Him and grow in intimacy.

Worship – to express your love and gratitude.

Obedience – to live out what He teaches.

Live in Community

Jesus didn’t call us to follow Him alone. He calls us into a family—the Church—where we grow, serve, and encourage one another.

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together… but encouraging one another.” (Hebrews 10:24-25).

Being part of a local church helps you stay strong in your faith and gives you opportunities to serve others as Jesus did.

Grow in Christlikeness

Following Jesus means becoming more like Him in character—loving others, showing mercy, speaking truth, and living with humility.

“Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.” (1 John 2:6).

This is a lifelong process. You won’t be perfect, but God is faithful to complete the work He started in you (Philippians 1:6).

Trust Jesus in Every Circumstance

Following Jesus doesn’t mean life will be easy, but it does mean you’ll never walk alone. He promises to be with you, guide you, and give you peace.

“Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20).

In Summary

To follow Jesus day by day means:

Surrendering your will to His.

Staying close to Him through prayer and Scripture.

Living in community with other believers.

Becoming more like Him in love and obedience.

Trusting Him in every situation.

As compelling truth puts it:

“Jesus offers us eternal salvation, but also helps day-to-day if we really want to follow Him. Follow Him, read the Bible, pray, join with other believers, and get baptized.”
