Why Does a Good God Allow Us to Suffer?
Hard times are a guaranteed part of the Christian life. However, if our view of God is too simple, suffering can quickly make us feel confused and afraid. We find ourselves asking tough questions: If God is completely in control, why is He letting this happen to me? If He has a master plan for the world, why did He include this painful problem in my life?
These are honest, fair questions, and we need real answers. Many Christians struggle to connect the reality of a powerful God with the reality of a painful life. Some people even claim that a loving God would never allow bad things to happen, so they stop believing that God is in control. This is a big misunderstanding of the Bible.
Even after years of faith, many of us still have a voice in the back of our minds that whispers, “What did I do wrong? Is God punishing me?” Growing up without clear teaching about God’s grace makes this confusion worse. It makes you feel like God is a loving Father when you are good, but a terrifying judge ready to cast you away the moment you slip up. This leaves you trapped on a spiritual rollercoaster, constantly wondering, “Does He love me, or does He love me not?”
True spiritual freedom comes when you realize a life-changing truth: God does not use trials to punish you; He uses them to shape you. Here are three distinct ways God uses our daily struggles, along with some deeper insights into how He works through our pain.
Struggles Prove Our Faith is Real
In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ — (1 Peter 1:6-7).
Just like fire purifies real gold by burning away the junk, hard times show that your faith is the real deal. Fake faith looks great when life is easy, but it falls apart and walks away when trouble hits. When you choose to keep trusting God through deep pain, you prove to yourself and the world that your faith is genuine.
Additionally, struggles act like a spiritual mirror. They show us our weak spots. They reveal where we are still holding onto secret sins, where we have forgotten to pray, or where we are trying to survive using our own human strength instead of relying entirely on God.
Hardships Correct Our Path and Build Endurance
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing — (James 1:2–4).
God uses difficulties to gently grab our attention and pull us back to His mercy, grace, and strength. The Christian life is not lived in a textbook; it is lived by real people with real fears, real heartbreaks, and messy problems.
Every leader and believer faces a “first major crisis” that feels like the end of the world. It causes sleepless nights, stress, and anxiety. Yet, looking back, you can see how God safely carried you through it. He uses those moments to break our bad habit of relying only on ourselves.
When we feel sorry for ourselves, God’s Word reminds us of a vital reality check found in (Jeremiah 12:5): If you have raced with men on foot, and they have wearied you, how will you compete with horses?” In other words, if small hurdles wipe us out, how will we face bigger challenges? Enduring smaller trials trains us for the future and teaches us to depend on a God who is infinitely bigger than any problem we will ever face.
Our Weakness Puts God’s Power on Display
When we are at our lowest point, we often think we are useless to God. But the Bible teaches the exact opposite: God’s strength shines brightest when we are weak.
The Apostle Paul begged God to take away a painful struggle in his life, but God replied, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). When you are strong, people praise your talent and your effort. But when you are completely broken, exhausted, and down to your last drop of energy—and yet you still find the strength to smile, love others, and keep moving forward—people look at you and say, That must be God, because there is no human way they could do that alone. Your struggles become a stage where God can display His supernatural strength.
Suffering Connects Us Deeper to Christ and Community
We worship a Savior, Jesus Christ, who is called a “man of sorrows” and is deeply acquainted with grief. When you suffer, you are not drifting away from Jesus; you are actually entering into a deeper fellowship with Him. He knows exactly what it feels like to be lonely, betrayed, falsely accused, and physically broken. In your darkest moments, He is not looking down at you with disappointment—He is sitting right next to you in the dirt.
Furthermore, God never intended for you to carry your heavy burdens alone. He built the church to be a family. When you go through a trial, it gives the people around you a chance to be the hands and feet of Jesus by cooking a meal, praying over you, or just sitting quietly by your side.
Our Pain Prepares Us to Help Others
Your current struggle is not just about your own spiritual growth; it is also about the people God will place in your path in the future. The Bible tells us that God comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others with that same comfort (2 Corinthians 1:4).
Years from now, you will sit across the table from someone who is crying, completely heartbroken, and going through the exact same nightmare you are surviving today. Because you walked through the fire and made it out, you will be able to look them in the eye and say with absolute certainty, “I know exactly how much this hurts. But I promise you, God is faithful, and you are going to make it.” Your misery will turn into your ministry.
Our Response Allows Us to Glorify God
Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name — (1 Peter 4:16).
Consider the incredible testimony of a young person facing a terminal illness, like cancer. When a dying believer looks at their friends and family and prays a beautiful prayer of thanksgiving—praising God because the sickness made them depend entirely on Him—the world stops and takes notice. That is a faith that conquers death itself.
The way you handle your trials before a watching world is the loudest sermon you will ever preach. Whatever you are facing today, know that you are not a victim of bad luck, fate, or random chance. You have a deeply loving Heavenly Father who is actively tailoring your circumstances to refine you, protect you, and bless you. Every single day brings a brand-new opportunity to honor Him by choosing trust over worry.
